We build crazy elaborate swimming pools with tons of large plumbing, in Michigan…we use sand filters because we find they are the best fit for our pools. Maintenance to the homeowner is pretty simple – backwash when the filter needs it and the system is good to go. We do recommend sand changes ever 3-5 years, or when the filter is showing it is time either by lessened time in between backwashes, or if the pool just doesn’t stay as clear as it has in the past.
In Michigan, especially for homeowners on wells, iron in the water is also an issue. Sand filters in combination with FerriIron Tablets help to keep this under control (and the iron out of the water.
