The Australorp is an Australian breed, was selected for its high egg production, and was developed primarily from Black Orpingtons that were exported from England in the 1890s to early 1900. Australian breeders selected large Black Orpingtons because of their efficient egg production and Orpington shape. Today, the Australorp is still a favorite egg producer in small and backyard flocks. Despite their record-breaking egg production, they are still considered a dual-purpose breed that grows at a good rate and has a well-fleshed carcass. The plumage is pure black with an intense beetle-green sheen that is breathtaking when seen in the sunlight. Their legs and toes are also black while the bottoms of the feet are white.

HI, I’m Sandi and I suppose you could refer to me as the “mother clucker” of the group. You’ll also be introduced to many of our #legendarygoldens along the way. Emme I believe fancies herself the chicken keeper. She is the first one to join us anytime we do anything with the chicks.
I’m a first time chicken owner learning as quickly as I can. I love taking photos of our chicks as you can likely see from this website ;o) I am trying to identify the chicks as they grow, but am not sure who’s who and even what we brought home as the young chicks I think were subject to some mix-up through their first few days before we got them home. I’d love your input and feedback if you can share knowledge and info on anything I post, whether it’s identifying the breed of chicken or ideas and information on anything I or the readers of this site should know! Either way, thanks for checking it out and enjoying this journey with us!

I came across your post randomly but was looking at Frick and her adoptees. Actually sent that to a friend who has a broody girl b/c it was very interesting way to handle that plus expand your flock! As far as her breed, she looks like a Cream Legbar to me but wasn’t sure what color eggs she was laying. The Cream Legbar chickens lay a beautiful blue egg. One of the most popular auto-sexing breeds in the world, the Cream Legbar is still very rare in the United States. Female hens sport a small crest and are silver grey with a salmon-colored breast. I’ve wanted to add this breed to my flock this year but our local store didn’t get any in. I should have ordered direct…maybe next year!
I believe she was sold to us as a green egg layer, but the folks at Rural King have admitted when chicks come in sometimes there was a person working who just put them wherever they thought they should go…hence the mixing and guess work of who was who. I do believe frick lays a green egg, we have only recently added blue to our mix this year! Yes, I love adding chicks to broody girls. So much less work for us, and they get the joy of babies!
